About the League
Heartland Tennis League is a community-run competitive league for adult tennis players in Joplin and the surrounding region. We organize a year-round challenge ladder and regular events to give area players a structured way to compete outside of USTA league seasons.
The league is open to all skill levels. Whether you're a 3.0 looking for consistent match play or a 4.5+ looking for tough competition, the ladder will find your level.
League Rules
How the ladder works, match format, and what's expected of every player.
Challenge Rules
Challenge Up
You may challenge anyone up to 3 spots above you. For example, #7 can challenge #4, #5, or #6 — not #3 or higher.
Challenge Down
Higher-ranked players cannot challenge downward. You wait for challenges to come to you.
One at a Time
You may only have one active challenge at a time. After finishing a match, wait 24 hours before issuing another challenge.
Response Time
Once challenged, you must accept within 48 hours and the match must be played within 10 days. One reschedule is allowed. Vacation or injury status pauses challenges. Failure to respond is a forfeit.
Protection Rule
After successfully defending a challenge, the top player receives a 48-hour protection window before they can be challenged again.
Ladder Movement
If the Challenger Wins
They take the opponent's spot. Everyone between shifts down one. Example: if #7 beats #4, the new order is 1-2-3-7-4-5-6.
If the Challenger Loses
No movement. Both players stay where they are.
New Players
New players are placed by skill level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) or through a placement match — not automatically at the bottom.
Match Format
Singles
Best of 3 sets. Third set can be a full set or a 10-point match tiebreak — format is decided at the start of the season.
Doubles
Same format as singles. Both teams must report the result.
Reporting Scores
The winner reports the score, date, and location. The opponent confirms. Rankings update immediately.
Activity Requirements
Minimum Activity
Every player must complete at least 2 matches per month (or one match every two weeks).
Inactivity Penalty
Inactive players drop 2–3 spots per month on the ladder.
Doubles Ladder
Option 1 — Individual Rankings
Each player has their own ranking and can partner with anyone. Both individuals gain or lose position. More flexible and easier to schedule.
Option 2 — Fixed Teams
Teams have a single ranking. If partners split up, the team leaves the ladder. Best if teams stay together all season.
Tournaments & Awards
Monthly Tournament
A mini tournament each month. The winner earns one bonus ladder position or a priority challenge.
King of the Hill
Each month, the #1 player must defend against #2 and #3. Win both and earn the "King of the Hill" title for that month.
End-of-Year Championship
Top 8 players compete in a single-elimination bracket. Winner earns the Club Champion title and trophy.
Bonus Incentives
Points awarded beyond ladder position: Win = 5 pts, Play = 1 pt, Upset = +2 pts. Awards for longest winning streak, most active player, and highest climb.
Sportsmanship
Bring new balls (alternate responsibility). Arrive within 15 minutes of scheduled time. Call your own lines fairly. Respect your opponents. Default only for legitimate reasons. Repeated no-shows result in removal from the league.
